Winter Olympics Host Cities, Mapped
All the Winter Olympics Host Cities from Chaminox, France, in 1924 through to Salt Lake City, USA, in 2034
The 2026 Winter Olympics are on and in full swing in Italy, which is fun to watch. There are athletes from all over the world carving up the ice and snow, hoping to snag a medal or set a new record. That led me to take a look at all of the Winter Olympic host cities that have held the Games since the first in Chamonix, France, in 1924.
You can see the host cities on this map. All host cities are in the Northern Hemisphere—which makes sense given the time of year. Be sure to zoom in to the Europe region, where there’s a large cluster of host cities. An interesting tidbit: the 1940 and 1944 Winter Olympics were cancelled due to World War II. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, hosted the Games in 1936. Can you imagine being in Germany at that time, trying to celebrate the Olympics while also feeling a sense of unease as tensions grew in Germany and around the world?
